In July of 2007, Jackie Vassalo purchased the business at 358 Merchant Street from Ginger Norman of GNorman Salon. Jackie immediately closed the doors and completely renovated the entire inside of the building and created "Talk of the Town Salon & Spa" in just 3 short weeks.

Jackie is thrilled that Ginger stayed and takes care of all of her ladies. Jackie says, "We are a true family unit and all of us gals support each other fully. We are planning as a whole to attend the IBS show in Las Vegas in June, 2009 to educate ourselves even more to bring back to our customers all of the latest techniques and fashion!"

Cupid:

Cupid was the Roman God of love, based on the Greek God of love, Eros. He was so beautiful, that he could make people go weak at the knees. He originally had two arrows, one for love, and one for hate, which he shot at Gods and mortals alike. He liked to make a mess by making one person fall in love with another person, and making that person hate them. He ended up accidentally pricking himself, and falling in love with a mortal named Psyche who could never know who he was. In the Renaissance, Artists began painting cupid as baby angels called Putti. That is why Cupid is now pictured as a baby.

The Valentine:

The first Valentine was said to have been sent by Saint Valentine himself, though no proof backs this up. It was signed "From your Valentine". the first recorded Valentine was sent in the 15th century from Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife. In 1797, companies first began selling valentines to people who could not create their own. England began making them in factories in the 1800s, originally with real lace, and eventually with paper lace in the mid 1800s. They were first mass produced in America by Esther Howland after 1847. Today, many companies create many different kinds of valentines. They are exchanged on Valentine's day, not only between couples, but between friends, family members, coworkers, classmates, and others as well.

Leap Day/Leap Year:

In the Gregorian calendar (used by most countries), Leap Day is the extra day in Leap Year that occurs every 4 years. The next leap day is February 29, 2012. Leap years are every year that is divisible by 4, except years that are divisible by 100, unless the year is also divisible by 400. Sound confusing? Then all you need to know is that leap year is every 4 years skipping the years 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, etc.

Leap years are required so that the calendar stays in alignment with the earth's motion around the sun. This alignment, calculated by the mean time between two successive vernal equinoxes, is 365.2422 days long, resulting in an error of .2422 days in a 365 day calendar year. After 100 years, the calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the seasons. Leap years keep the calendar in line with the seasons.

In this case, you will be able to get away with wearing just about any shade. If you are darker or have heavy freckles, light red hair might look silly. Go more the russet route and stay away from red clothes.

Try it in stages if your hair is already dark. Get red highlights and if you like them, get more. Dark auburn is a way to sneak into being a redhead. Blonds, unfortunately, have to just go for it. Their hair could look orange if they got highlights, or the red could be extremely noticeable from the rest of their hair color. Try for something less intense your first few goes.

Hair Color - What's the Best Choice for Me?

With so many hair colors out there, what is the best one for you? Is it Jen Aniston's highlights? Is it the beautiful red Rene Russo wore in The Thomas Crown Affair? How about the shiny, nearly black shade of Courtney Cox's long locks?

When deciding on the right hair color for yourself, there are a number of options to consider. As a professional stylist since (yikes!) 1984, I can help, even without seeing your hair. While choosing the right color can be practically, emotionally, and financially based, you should actually consider all of these when making the right choice. Let's get started!

Let me begin by saying that I am a current working stylist, behind the chair five days a week. Most of my clientele pay me to color their hair, while I have a few that color it themselves at home. I will address both of these options here, and help you to ask the right questions to get to the best choice for you.

I believe it's best to have your hair colored by a professional. You're not surprised are you? Here's why: I've seen many "home" hair colors go wrong, and I assure you that it's more cost effective to have someone like me do it right the first time. Corrective color can be very costly, not to mention the damage that can be done by having to color more than once in a short span of time. If you absolutely must color at home, I recommend using deposit-only color, (which contains no ammonia and doesn't lighten the hair), and choosing a color that is at least one shade lighter than you think you want the first time. Don't trust the picture on the box! It's not what it appears most of the time. It's much easier to darken the color if it's too light than the reverse.

Okay, so you've decided to have your stylist color your hair. If you're switching from home hair color, be aware that it might take a couple of salon visits to make the change-over. Depending on what you've been coloring with, your stylist may have to make some adjustments to the color that won't be completely transformed on the first visit. If they're like me, they will protect the integrity of your hair even if it means more than one visit to perfect it.

No matter who will be doing the color, whether it's your regular stylist or someone new, you should be prepared to ask and answer some questions first. The first question to ask isn't what color, but how often? It won't make you happy to have a color that requires monthly salon visits if you and/or your budget will allow a visit say, every eight weeks. That's four weeks of thinking why did I do this? There are color choices for every time frame, and going a bit longer between visits can change the equation from budget-busting to affordable just like that. If your hair is naturally dark, platinum highlights aren't the right choice if you don't want to be in the salon a minimum of every four weeks. Maybe highlights in a softer caramel or beige color would work better for you. (Although if you're fond of the latest "Ombre" highlighted look, grown out roots might be just what you've been dreaming of.) See? There's a color for everyone!

If you want to eliminate gray hair, there are many options, but again we must consider the time factor. How fast does your hair grow? How much gray hair do you have? If you are just starting to gray, highlights can be the answer until your gray hair measures 50% or more of your hair volume. Up to 50% can usually be blended in with highlights in the right shade, depending on your natural color. If your hair is naturally dark, again, be careful with how light you make those highlights, as the regrowth of dark hair can be difficult to manage unless you don't mind more frequent visits to the salon. If highlighting isn't the right choice for you, and you want to stay as natural looking as possible, your stylist can match a shade of your natural color and get rid of the gray that way. Custom colors can be added that will enhance the color too, so you can have a bit of fun with it, in addition to covering the gray.

Another way to beat the gray and not break your budget is to alternate between highlights and root coloring every other visit. Here's how it works: start with highlights, either partial or full, you and your stylist will decide which one makes sense for you. Hint: if your hair is shoulder length or above, a partial should be sufficient. Six to eight weeks later when you go back to the salon, your stylist touches up the "roots" or regrowth of your hair with a color, which buffers the area from regrowth to highlights. Reason for this is twofold: a touchup is less expensive than a highlight, it takes less time. And over time, this looks more natural than either a highlight or color alone especially if you are factoring in gray hair which can be so unruly! One thing that plagues many women that has little to do with a woman's health is hair loss after pregnancy. In order to better understand this condition it is important to understand more about how hair works.

To begin with, only about 90% of the hair on anyone's head is growing at any given time. The other 10% is in what is known as the dormant phase. This dormant hair falls out about every two to three months. Due to the changes in hormone levels during pregnancy, an increased number of hair follicles go into this dormant phase causing a number of different reactions from the hair. Some women report that their hair actually gets thicker while still others complain that their hair begins to fall out.

It is important to not get too upset when hair loss begins to take place. Remembering that there is always hair in the hair brush even when you are not pregnant should help to alleviate some of the concerns. Hair loss after pregnancy is normal and should not send anyone into a panic. Once the body returns to its pre-pregnancy hormonal balance the condition will correct itself.

Excess hair loss that can occur immediately after delivery is known as telogen effluvium, and it can take place from one to five months after the birth of a child. This condition affects about 50% of women and it is normal. While this is something that causes many women to wonder if they will lose all of their hair, that will not be the case. The hair follicles are just catching up with their normal cycle and once this happens, hair growth will return to normal.

There are some things that can be done to create a healthier looking head of hair and to reduce hair loss during and shortly after pregnancy.

• Avoid wearing your hair in tight styles that will pull or stress the hair

• Eat a well-balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables

• Use the cool settings on hair dryers or other instruments you use on the hair

In the winter there is less humidity in the air and the heating in our homes is a dry heat, so you can imagine how that dryness affects our hair! During the cold season comes the inevitable static electricity that collects in the hair and tends to build up when we brush the hair, remove a sweater, hat, scarf, etc. Sound familiar? Let's look at some tips and tricks to lessen static cling and stop flyaway hair!

The laundry room is the first place to head if you are looking for an immediate solution to static-y hair. Try rubbing a dryer sheet on your hairbrush and then brushing your hair; or better yet, rub the dryer sheet directly onto your hair to encourage the hair to lie flat against your head. Dryer sheets are formulated to discourage static electricity production in the dryer so why not use it for your hair?

An easy trick (that won't involve visiting the laundry room) is using hair spray. Spray a generous amount of hairspray on your hairbrush and brush your hair thoroughly while the brush is still damp. This technique also works well when sprayed onto a tissue and rubbed across the hair.
Hair spray isn't the only styling aid useful in this situation...hair gel can also be helpful not only to control static but to tame those pesky flyaways! Squirt a small amount of gel into your hands and rub them together and then lightly rub your hands through your hair.
If you're in a pinch and away from the bathroom, try using hand lotion! Rub the lotion completely into your hands and run them over you hair. Make sure to use a small amount though to prevent hair from looking oily.
Wetting your hands or brush with clean water and patting down or brushing your hair to smooth static-filled strands is also an option but if you have already gone to the trouble of styling your hair, this may not be a sensible choice.
Although quick fixes are gratifying, a little prevention never hurts either!

Using conditioner is a good routine to get into for many reasons but putting moisture back into the hair is the main one, which also helps to reduce the static. You should use a regular conditioner for daily use or a deep conditioning treatment once a week (or more if you feel your hair needs it) for a more intense result. If you decide to use a deep conditioner, try this little trick for the best results!

After you've applied the treatment to the hair and scalp (you think your scalp isn't dry too?), dip a towel in hot water. Rinse out the water and wrap your hair in the warm towel. The heat helps open up the hair cuticle allowing more of the moisture to seep in. Leave for 30 minutes and shampoo.
Last but not least, avoid brushes made of synthetic fibres. Brushes made of wood and/or have natural fibre bristles are best because they don't hold a charge as easily as synthetic ones such as plastic or vinyl do.

Many people want to have great hair most of the time. We use shampoo to clean it and we give it a trim or a new style whenever we feel like it. But more than the styling, proper hair cleaning and maintenance are very important.

Isn't it that personal hygiene covers the entire body of a person? That's right. It is, therefore, called upon us to clean our whole body every day from heat to foot. Sometimes, though, not every one of us will agree that hair should be washed every day. There are some people who believe that daily use of shampoo and conditioner is harmful to the hair that it could lead to dryness.

The truth is that you are not causing harm to your hair if you wash it every day. What matters are the products (shampoo and conditioner) you use, the amount you apply on your hair and the temperature of the water you use. In choosing your shampoo, make sure to pick the one that fits your hair type - oily, dry or limp.

Next step is to choose the right water temperature when washing your hair. Go for the warm temperature which means it should not be too hot. Using hot water can take away your skin's natural oils leading to flakes or dandruff.

After you have prepared your water, it's time to get your shampoo. But wait, remember to pour only a sufficient amount into your palm and then massage it gently on your hair and scalp as you work up a lather. Rinsing is a critical part of washing your hair. The best way to do it, according to the professional hairdressers, is to stand under running water to ensure that no residue is left on your hair. Additionally, rinse twice if possible.

Now that you've washed your hair clean, drying and combing come next. Ideally, towel drying is best. Pat your hair gently using a towel making sure that there's no water dripping and then let it dry the natural way. It's okay to use a hair dryer but you have to do it right. To avoid damaging your hair, hold the dryer about six inches away from your head first using the high speed and temperature and lowering it as your hair starts to dry. I have the great privilege to watch women walk into the salon feeling out of sorts and walk out with a bounce. The simple act of the right haircut makes us feel good. But give a woman the wrong hair and she's miserable. If the hairstyle does not accurately reflect who she is, it is often the result of the hairdresser not getting an accurate read. Some less experienced hairdressers see women in the second act as "older" and cookie-cut in kind. This is why it is important to have your image profile adjectives at hand, ready to explain how you want your hair to look and feel. Let's discuss what your image profile says about you and your hair.

What Your Image Profile Says

Classic Hair

As a Classic, a timeless and appropriate hairstyle feels best to you. You prefer your hair to feel finished and put together. Once you've found a style that works, it's likely you will keep it for a long time. Though you may sometimes feel like you should be trying something new, you come back quickly to what works.

My client Mary, a Classic, has worn the exact same haircut since I attempted to help her grow it into something new years ago. Though she sometimes is concerned about being too staid, there is no reason to change. Change is not always good, particularly for the classic. You're most comfortable with balanced hair color close to what you are (or were) naturally. If you're covering gray, soft medium to light browns, or blondes, these tend to work best as they appear most natural. For the Classic, it doesn't have to be natural, just look natural. When you've found the perfect color there is no reason to change. It's your color and should work well for you for years.

Use the words classic, sophisticated, timeless, and appropriate when talking to your hairdresser. There is nothing wrong and very much right with preferring a classic hairstyle. With a classic style you will always be appropriate and attractive.

Casual Hair

If you are a Casual, you prefer your hair to be practical, sporty, simple, and fresh. Relaxed, comfortable and hassle-free, you like your hair to match your informal lifestyle. You like to look good, but often don't like to spend the time it may take to make that happen. This is can be a challenge as you age. Looking natural and being natural are two different things.

Simple, no nonsense hairstyles appeal to you as you "just don't have the time to fuss" with complicated hairstyles. Usually short, or long and pulled back works best. You are more likely to procrastinate about coloring your hair. If you finally do, it is nothing too far from your natural color.

Consider adding softness to that drama as you age, however. Stacy came to me with a hard-edged black blunt bob. At age 56, her signature look had become a bit off-putting. But by softly angling the geometrics and lifting the color, it allowed her to keep the drama suitably becoming.

Remind your stylist that you want a cut that is "a look." This way they know to think out of the box a bit and push the boundaries to match your theatrical panache. Oily hair is caused by, well, extra oil in your hair. But where does this oil come from? The oil you find in your hair is called sebum, a natural oil produced by the body in order to keep the skin moisturized and to avoid drying out. It may seem a little contradictory if you have dandruff due to oily hair, but this is only because dead skin flakes off naturally and the presence of too much oil in your hair is trapping the flakes. The flakes then collect and become greasy and it is harder for them to disperse.

Yes, you are probably sitting there thinking, Ew, gross, but oil just happens to be a natural thing. Oily hair does not necessarily mean dirty hair. The problem you now face is that there is too much oil and you want to learn how to be rid of it.

Just like any problem you might have with your skin and hair, there are always various reasons for an issue to come about. Hormones have always been linked to excess sebum production, such as in the case of acne. If you are taking birth control pills that may be one reason you now find yourself with oily hair. Birth control pills toy with your hormones a little, which may be throwing your sebum production out of wack. The trick to stopping or at least slowing down oily hair is to know what the reason is and adjust accordingly. Obviously you cannot just stop taking your birth control pills, but there are other options you can take a look at.

Frequent grooming can help attribute to the look of oily hair. When you comb or brush your hair, you are essentially dragging sebum from close to your scalp and around the roots of your hair down through the rest of your hair. Avoid being too brush happy, as it will only result in your hair looking and feeling limp and greasy.

On the same note, people that are always touching and playing with their hair are only aiding in the oiliness of their scalp and hair, so be mindful of idle fingers!

Eating healthy foods can improve your body in many, many ways. The body is always in need of vitamins, minerals, and other nutritious elements to remain fresh and in top notch. Other things you subject your hair and scalp to, such as chemical treatments or different styling products might only be adding to your oil problem. Try not to go overboard on products and read labels to find out if that product is for oily hair or contains any oils of its own.

Oily hair does not have to be a problem if you do not want it to be. You might even try asking your stylist for ideas on how to control oily hair or receive product suggestions.

Use Protection

Besides drinking plenty of water, also make sure that your hair gets its daily hydration. This means using a high quality conditioner suited to your hair type. When it comes to choosing hair conditioners, experiment a lot with different brands to find the one that suits you perfectly. Pick up a few sample packs and try them over the span of a month. Keep in mind that pricier does not always have to mean better; often, cheaper conditioners might turn out to be much better than their expensive counterparts.

It is also a very good idea to use a hair moisturizer regularly. Apply the moisturizer at night and wash it off in the morning. Make it a part of your daily summer hair care regimen.

While we are on the subject of hydration and hair care for summer, remember to always use cold water for washing your hair. I know it is a foregone conclusion, but the importance of NOT using warm water for washing hair (as it strips the hair of moisture) can never be emphasized enough.

Other Summer Hair Care Tips

Always wear a cap if you are going out for swimming. Always wash your hair after you've taken a swim. Avoid heating your hair through flat-irons or curling-irons - it can lead to long term damage to your hair.

Also try to avoid excessive styling products, especially the ones containing alcohol and paraffin gel. Buy some natural, organic products instead. They may be slightly more expensive, but provide much better returns in the form of healthier hair.
